What this package changes
Keep Jace, Multiverse Architect as commander. His −3 exiles another target creature or planeswalker you control, then reveals until a creature or planeswalker appears and puts it onto the battlefield. Use expendable tokens; ordinary mana rocks stay out of that reveal pool. Small utility creatures also become possible hits, so these swaps add three substantial creatures and two noncreature spells.
This is a Jace plan, not a Nissa landfall rebuild. It retains the stock mana base and token engines. Jace still needs all four colors, and five swaps do not solve every awkward opening hand. The package removes some political, Sphinx and combat tools in exchange for clearer reveal payoffs and interaction.
After all five swaps: 100 cards, 93 unique names, 1 commander and 99 library cards. The land count is unchanged at 39. Three creatures replace three creatures, an instant replaces an instant, and a sorcery replaces an instant. No green-identity cards are added.
The mean mana value of the 61 nonland cards, including the commander and counting X as zero, changes from 4.05 to 4.02. That small change does not make the deck a low-curve build. Land-based color sources are unchanged; no mana rocks are removed.
Five cards out, five cards in
1. Dack Fayden, Helping Hand → Ovika, Enigma Goliath
Dack puts creatures from your library under opponents’ control, which suits a political plan but gives away possible Jace hits. Ovika keeps its value on your side: casting noncreature spells makes hasty Goblin tokens for attacks or later Jace activations. It costs seven mana to cast and does nothing immediately if you reveal it with no follow-up spell, so this trades table politics for an ongoing token engine.

2. Akroma, Angel of Fury → Ashen Rider
Akroma is a resilient attacker with protection from white and blue, but it has no enter-the-battlefield removal. Ashen Rider exiles a target permanent when it enters and again when it dies, so revealing it can answer a troublesome permanent immediately. You give up Akroma’s protections and repeatable firebreathing; Ashen Rider still costs eight mana if you must cast it from hand.

3. The Ur-Sphinx → Angel of the Ruins
The Ur-Sphinx rewards attacking with Sphinxes and can cast opponents’ milled cards, but this list is not built around a large Sphinx army. Angel of the Ruins can exile up to two artifacts and/or enchantments when it enters, giving a Jace reveal a clear removal role. Its Plainscycling for two mana can find a Plains card when stranded in hand. You lose the Sphinx’s attack-driven card access and larger body; this is a targeted role change, not a claim the original card is always worse.

4. Teferi's Reproach → Polymorph
Teferi’s Reproach temporarily protects an opponent and phases out that player’s nonland board, a flexible political or attack-window tool. Polymorph instead gives you another way to turn your own token into a creature when Jace is unavailable. It costs four mana at sorcery speed and can still reveal a modest creature; it does not find planeswalkers. This sacrifices the original’s instant-speed political flexibility for a redundant engine spell.

5. Brainsurge → Swan Song
Brainsurge draws cards and puts two cards back on top, which can set up Jace’s next reveal. Swan Song trades that draw and top-deck setup for a one-blue-mana answer to an enchantment, instant or sorcery spell, useful against many removal spells and board wipes during a key turn. Keep mana open before committing. It does not counter creatures or abilities, and the spell’s controller receives a flying 2/2 Bird. If you prefer draw setup to protection, keep Brainsurge and skip this swap.

Budget and price method
US$0.26 + US$0.54 + US$0.30 + US$2.23 + US$10.78 = US$14.11 for five additions. Currency: USD. Source: Scryfall’s USD nonfoil price field for the linked printings, reflecting its TCGplayer pricing feed; queried 21 October 2026. These are reference prices, not guaranteed checkout offers or proof of stock.
The cap covers new singles only. It excludes the precon you already own, shipping, sales tax, sleeves and tokens; no resale credit is assumed for cuts. We do not price the whole upgraded deck. Keep the package below US$25 by checking your actual cart first. If any printing is unavailable or the new singles exceed the cap, keep that original card and postpone the swap; every swap is one-for-one. Do not buy a foil or premium printing just to follow this guide.
Rules checks and a worked turn
Jace’s card explicitly permits him to be your commander. His color identity is white, blue, black and red; all five additions fit within it and were listed as Commander legal on the check date. The deck retains singleton nonbasic cards and the original basic-land quantities. This is ordinary 100-card Commander, not Commander Draft.
Example: start with Jace at 5 loyalty and a Soldier token. Activate −3: Jace goes to 2, and the target token is exiled on resolution. If the first creature or planeswalker revealed is Ashen Rider, put it onto the battlefield; its enter trigger can exile a target permanent. You did not cast Ashen Rider or pay its eight-mana cost. This example assumes the ability resolves with a legal target and no intervening effects; it is not a guaranteed draw sequence.
Polymorph works differently: it destroys a creature, then its controller reveals until a creature card appears. It cannot turn a planeswalker into a creature, and it cannot reveal a planeswalker. Target your own token for this plan; targeting an opponent’s creature gives that opponent the reveal. Do not mistake every transformation effect for Jace’s exact ability.
Swan Song counters only an enchantment, instant or sorcery spell. It cannot stop a creature spell or an activated ability, and the spell’s controller gets a 2/2 flying Bird. If it counters your opponent’s spell, that Bird belongs to the opponent and cannot be used for your Jace −3.
