Mille Bornes: quick rules
Build distance, stop rivals with hazards and get moving with remedies. Requires the commercial game's own cards.
Quick overview of classic four-player partnership play, using the Winning Moves rulebook and Hasbro's classic instructions. Keep your edition's full rulebook beside you for scoring and special-card timing.
Players
2, 3, 4 or 6 (classic rules)
Deck
A dedicated Mille Bornes set: 106 playing cards, plus edition-specific reference cards.
Goal
In classic partnership play, reach 5,000 points across hands, racing to exactly 1,000 miles each hand.
Setup
Form two partnerships, seated opposite. Remove reference cards, shuffle and deal six cards each; leave the rest as a draw pile. Partners share table piles.
How to Play
- Draw one card, then play or discard one. Normally start moving with Roll before laying mileage; hazards interrupt progress and remedies clear them.
- In this classic edition, Gasoline, Spare Tire or Repairs usually leaves you needing a later Roll before adding miles. With Right of Way already displayed, the appropriate remedy lets you resume mileage without a new Roll (printed pp. 10–11).
- Speed Limit permits only 25- or 50-mile cards until cleared. Do not overshoot 1,000 miles or use more than two 200-mile cards per team.
- Safeties protect against matching hazards and give another turn. A coup fourré is an immediate matching safety response; follow the rulebook for timing and replacement draws.
How to Win
A hand ends at exactly 1,000 miles, or after the draw pile and remaining hands are used. Score distance and bonuses using the rulebook. First to 5,000 wins; if both pass it that hand, the higher total wins.
Variants
Classic two- and three-player games use individual piles, remove five specified hazards and target 700 miles, with an optional extension to 1,000. Six-player rules also differ. Do not assume these player counts apply to every modern edition.
